Dramatic eye makeup is fun and trendy for the club, a romantic date, or a concert. Here are some simple dramatic eye makeup ideas that anyone can use to play up their look.

Smokey Eyes

Smokey eyes are a classic, timeless, sexy dramatic eye makeup look. To start, use a charcoal liner and smudge it against the lash line. Shade the lid with a dark grey and follow that with a lighter shade, such as grey, and put white or cream on the brow bone for a brightening highlight. Finish the look with a few coats of black mascara.

Tri-Color

Tri-color eyes are a hot trend right now in magazines, on TV, and on the catwalk.

To choose a color that looks particularly nice on you and take that color and choose three different types of that shade. For instance, navy blue, sky blue, and baby blue may make a good choice. Rose, pink, and baby pink are also another good example.

Put the darkest of that shade on the eyelid. Next, put the middle shade on the crease of the lid and the lightest color on the brow bone. Do not blend the colors.

This can be done with metallics as well. Start with the darker metallic, such as copper-gold. Next, follow it with a yellow gold, and silver for the brow bone.

Choose a liner that complements the lid color. You may also want to choose a lash color that goes with your triad. For example, if you choose a blue look, then go with navy mascara.

Red Eye

Red eye is a very dramatic eye makeup look that goes well with a black or red outfit and looks particularly good on brunets or those with black hair. Start by lining your eyes with black liner. Smudge the liner along the lash line and then apply apple red or blood red shadow. Put burgundy shadow in the crease and all the way up to the brow line. Black mascara and dramatically curled lashes finish the look.

Angel Eyes

This dramatic eye makeup look looks great on those with lighter hair color, such as redheads and blonds. Line the eyes with a brown or tawny liner. Next, use a frost color shadow on the eyelid, top and bottom, and the crease. Put a glittery white shadow on the brow bone. Dust the entire area with a fine glitter powder.

Try to make your look go with your outfit. The more dramatic the eye, the simpler your look should be.

Your eyes are the most prominent features of your face so you need to make the most of them when applying makeup. Choose an eye liner that is appropriate for the color of your eyes. For instance, if you have lovely brown eyes, it would be wise for you to get brown or plum shades. Note that plum shade eye liners flatter brown eyes and make them look really interesting. On the other hand, if your eyes have lighter color, navy blue and charcoal accent will look great on you.

Another thing that you need to consider when buying eye liner is the kind of look that you want to achieve. For instance, if you want to appear dramatic, you should get those liquid type eye liners. On the other hand, if you want to give your eyes a soft definition, a pencil will do the trick better.

Applying The Eye Liner

Take your time when applying your makeup. A hurriedly put on eye liner is not good to look at so make sure that you give yourself enough time to apply your makeup and make yourself you really pretty.

If you are using a cake eye liner, use a good brush to apply the eye liner. Put some water on your brush and then dip your brush into the cake. Use the brush to apply some color to your eyes. On the other, if you are using a pencil, adequately sharpen the pencil before you use it. When applying liners with the use of a brush or a pencil, hold the brush as if you are holding a pen, tilt your head upward slightly and then open your eyes halfway. With your brush or pencil, draw a line across the upper lids of your eyes. Your line should be just above your eyelashes. Use a mirror to help you see your face when applying the eye liner.

After applying your eye liner, smooth out the line with the use of cotton swab or your fingers. If you are using a liquid eye liner, make sure that you do not open your eyes fully before the liquid had completely dried or else you will smudge the folds of your eyes. When you are done with the upper lids of your eyes, apply the lines on your lower lids. Do not apply too much color on your eyes especially during the day because this could make you look unnatural. Just apply enough color to define your eyes, nothing more.

Cover Girl for $4.99 versus Clinique for $49 – the stark comparison is mind boggling and the question arises, is there really such a difference in quality? Is the eye makeup you buy for five dollars the same value you spend on something ten times more the price?

The answer is simple; the quality or the ingredients in both the eye makeup products at the department store and the drug store are not that different; however the prestige and the status symbol associated with Lancôme, Estee Lauder or Christian Dior is hardly that of Revlon, Maybelline and Cover Girl. A woman’s most precious asset is her face and her eyes speak volumes about her; she does not want to risk looking cheap or tacky with using something that costs as much as a sandwich on her eyes. She wants a top-notch eye makeup product just like she wants top of the line clothes and accessories.

Learn How to Apply the Product

However, if you were to dissect the eye makeup products of the major name brands and the more mass produced versions you can see that there is very little difference and if you know HOW to apply eye makeup, it really will not matter where you buy your shades from. If you know which color looks best on the top of the lid and which makes your eyes look bigger or brighter, then the name of the company of eye makeup you choose is irrelevant,

On the other hand, if you buy the most expensive Bobbi Brown eye makeup and have no clue as to how to apply it, then it will look blotchy and tacky irrespective of the hefty price tag that came with it.

Professional makeup experts have often confided in magazines and on television shows like ABC’s the View and the Oprah Show that learning the techniques of eye makeup is crucial. While they do endorse some big name products, they also admit to having drug store favorites as well. The trick is mixing and matching and finding the color or colors that suit your facial characteristics and skin tone the best and settling for the right color and the art of applying the eye makeup as opposed to the name behind it.

After all, when you go out for a night on the town, people will look at your eyes, they will not know what brand it was but what the end result is like. Therefore it is better to spend some money in leaning the art of applying foundation and eye makeup from a pro rather than thinking an exorbitantly priced product can transform you in to Cinderella with a magic wand.

One of the virtues of wearing glasses is that the frames can hide some of the skin flaws or strange wrinkles around your eyes. I usually get frames that cover up the dark circles beneath my eyes. But glasses needn’t be a barrier to let people look in your eyes. If you aren’t that interested in eye makeup tips for those who wear glasses, consider wearing sunglasses when you are in public, like Bono.

Less Is More

The best eye makeup tip for anyone who wears glasses is “When in doubt – leave it out.” There are a few career fields where heavy eye makeup is a necessity, but for most professions, any excess eye makeup is considered the sign of a person with questionable ethics. Even if you do have questionable ethics, you needn’t advertise it by wearing a lot of makeup. You want the least possible amount of make up on in order to look more honest and natural.

Be Honest About Your Eyesight

The next eye makeup tip is to make an honest appraisal of your eyesight. Putting on mascara, eye liner and eye shadow is very detailed work. If this stuff gets in your eyes, it is incredibly painful and can ruin what’s left of your vision. If your eyesight is not that great, consider either not wearing any eye makeup or wearing only flattering but barely noticeable eye shadow. Fashion is not worth a scratched cornea. If you forget all of the other eye makeup tips presented here, please don’t forget that.

Smears And Smudges

It will take practice to get to know how much eye makeup you can safely use without having most of it wind up on your glasses. Consider not wearing false eyelashes if your eyelashes already brush against your glasses. Here’s a good eye makeup tip — don’t just buy any eye make up – buy smear proof makeup (preferably that hasn’t been tested on animals!) This makeup dries very quickly, so it needs to be applied quickly.

Before putting any makeup on, clean and dry your skin. If you have dry or aging skin, you might want to put a moisturizer around your eyes and on your eye lids. If you are having an allergy attack, forget putting anything on your eye lids. After the moisturizer, gently smooth on oil free foundation makeup, and then wait at least one minute for it to dry. Then, you are good to go with your eye shadow, mascara or whatever you want to risk blinding yourself with.

Eye Shadow

I can remember what people dressed like when I was a young girl. It was the seventies, and I remember the tight t-shirts and the bell-bottoms quite well. I also remember that a lot of high school girls wore blue eye shadow and always seemed to be larger than life to me. As a child of five though, I guess I can understand this. If you look at fashion through the years, and the look of a certain decade, you may realize that it’s not about the clothes all of the time. You can sometimes date a photo by just looking at the eye shadow.

Make up differs through the years just like clothing trends. If you don’t believe me, just look at photos of girls in the eighties. They way they applied their makeup was the way of the times, and when the nineties rolled around, many people stopped wearing as much. Eye shadow went from wild to muted, if it was worn at all. Every year I hear a new color is in, but in reality, you can’t just wear a color if you want to look good. If everyone is wearing gobs of blue, that doesn’t not mean that you have to wear it, or that you should be wearing it.

There are certain colors of eye shadow that will make your eyes pop. My eyes are hazel, but they usually look green. In order to make them stand out, I wear purple eye shadow, and sometimes I had a little green to it. It works very well! I can wear brown with my eyes, but they don’t pop like they do when I apply the purple. There are colors of eye shadow that will do this for every eye color out there, though you may have to experiment until you find the one that works best for you.

You don’t have to spend a lot on your eye shadow, but the ones that cost a little more do tend to stay in place on your lids a little longer. Honestly though, I have found both expensive and inexpensive brands of eye shadow that work well for me and stay in place when I need them too. There is nothing worse than your make up running down your face when you are out in public. Make sure you get one that stays put, as that might be the most attractive look of all. It won’t matter what color you choose if it is all over your face.

Choosing an eye shadow isn’t hard, in fact, it can be fun. You just have to know what colors look best on you, what effects you want to achieve, and where you want to wear it.

Color

Eye shadow color should be chosen by two things, skin color and eye color.

Finding your skin color can be done by taking a look at the inside of your wrist. You will find that you will either have a yellowish or pinkish tone to the skin there. Your eye shadow will need to have a tone to match this tone. For instance, if you have a yellow tone to your skin you will need to choose an eye shadow that has warmer tones, such as rust, browns, orangey pinks, pumpkins, and yellow-reds. If you have a pink tone to your skin you should choose cooler colors such as charcoal, rosy pinks, blue-reds, chocolate browns, and blues. Metallics should also be chosen by skin color. Gold and copper look great on women with yellow tones to their skin, while silver looks fantastic on women with pink tones.

To match eye shadow to eye color, just take a look at some of the prepackaged eye shadow kits labeled by color. These kits are made by several makeup companies and have colors specifically for each eye color. You will usually find that blue eyes look best in blues and browns. Brown eyes look best in greens and yellows. Green eyes look good in browns and grays.

Effects

You should also buy eye shadow for the different effects you want to use on your eyes. If you love the smoky look then choose grays and charcoals. If you like dewy, fresh looks then pick pinks, creams, and frosty whites.

Day and Night

During the day, eye shadow colors should be light and less dramatic. Down play your day look a lot. At night they can be dark and as dramatic as you like. Take into consideration where you will be, as well. A club requires a more dramatic look than a fancy restaurant, for instance.

Matching

Way back when, women matched their eye shadow to their outfits. Today this is not only unnecessary, but if you matched every outfit with shadow then you would be overwhelmed. Simply compliment your outfit with contrasting or complementary colors that look good on you.

Take all of these ideas into consideration before you shop and you should come home with eye shadows that look great on you no matter what you are wearing.
